Camping at Widemouth Bay, Cornwall

We spent a great weekend with some friends from Helen's ante-natal class. Cathy, Richard, Matthew & Arthur invited us all down to their holiday house in Widemouth Bay, just outside Bude in Cornwall. We all camped in the garden, and as you would expect for a weekend in July, the resistance of our tents to high winds and driving rain was tested to the extreme. Saturday dawned bright and sunny, but quickly settled into rain & gusty wind, but after a brief trip to the beach & lunch we went for a great walk from Hennett Church (I think) down to Boscastle along the river valley. The older kids (Elspeth, Matthew, Gwen & Charlotte) all walked the whole way (about 2miles) spurred on by the promise of the sweetshop in Boscastle!
We went home to dry out, and the boys were sent out on a mission for fish & chips. Richard had promised us a pint of local cider while the fish were battered and potatoes chipped; but the mums' visions of us being ensconced in a warm hostelry with hot & cold running barmaids, the roaring fire and flaggons of cider, frittering away our childrens' dinner money sadly did not come to pass. We settled for a pint standing outside in the rain. Still, the brollies came in handy, and the fish & chips were great.
The hardier souls returned to the tents for a second night, whilst others of a more sensitive constitution took to the safety of bricks & mortar.
On the Sunday we packed up and went down to the beach for the British Grand Prix (Widemouth Bay leg), a top greasy spoon lunch, some sandcastle building and a dip in the sea for Milo, Andy and Cathy. We caught some great weather on the beach - mostly sunny with a few cloudy spells and no rain.
We finally rounded up some worn-out kids, bundled them into the cars and headed back to Bristol. A great weekend, and many thanks to Cathy, Richard, Matthew & Arthur; Sara, Richard, Gwen & Issy and Sarah, Andy, Charlotte & Emily.
