We went over to Westport, Co. Mayo, to meet up with our friends Steve, Berni, Connor & Niall; and to house-sit Berni's sister's place & dog. We had a fantastic time - Elspeth made a new friend on the flight over (a 7 year old girl, Juno) who became the subject of non-stop dicussion and admiration after we arrived, but only up until Daniel arrived (Connor & Nialll's cousin), at which point Juno was old-hat and Daniel the flavour of the month! The scenery in the area is stunning (when you can see it through the clouds / rain!) - although the weather wawsn't great for the first couple of days, the Saturday before we came back on the Sunday was lovely & sunny, and we got to the beach and went in the sea, and got the kids (especially Niall and little boy blue (Fraser)) thouroughly frozen!
Westport is a great little town, and we also went to Westport House which is a small theme-park type place. Steve, myself and the kids were sent on the log flume, which was actually just an eleaborate way of filling our shoes with water (kids were fine in their top-to-bottom waterproofs)! The kids loved it - getting life-jacketed up for the swan pedaloes, going on the big wavy slide and a picnic lunch too - brilliant.
So a good time was had by all, and we were even able to put our feet up and relax in the evening (in front of a peat fire), so many thanks to Berni's sister & husband....
And we didn't even have a pint of Guinness - against the law, I'm sure!
